China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Fu Cong called on Monday for the promotion of multilateralism and efforts to achieve common security.
Fu Cong stood up during the meeting. UN Security Council, chaired by the Chairman of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). According to him, the current global security situation continues to deteriorate, characterised by worsening geopolitical conflicts, frequent crisis hotspots, a significant increase in unilateralism and protectionism, and interconnected traditional and non-traditional security threats.
In this context, Fu believes it is important for the UN and regional organisations, including the OSCE, to strengthen cooperation and make a significant contribution to maintaining international peace and security.
„Under the current circumstances, it is crucial for the international community to promote the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security,“ Fu said, calling on the international community to support global security governance and strive for universal and common security.
Fu also emphasised that the international community should practise genuine multilateralism, adhere to the objectives and principles of the UN Charter, and firmly uphold the international system with the UN at its core.
The envoy called for support for dialogue and consultation, a joint rejection of the Cold War mentality and bloc confrontations, the facilitation of peace talks, and mediation based on the needs and will of the countries involved. The parties to the conflict should build trust, resolve disputes, and promote security through dialogue.
Many members of the Security Council touched upon the issue of Ukraine. According to Fu, China's position on this issue is consistent and clear: „Dialogue and negotiation are the only viable way to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.“
China calls on all parties concerned to play their part in building a balanced, effective and sustainable European security framework.
