The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) concluded in Belém, Brazil, delivering a hard-fought set of outcomes amid rising geopolitical tensions and mounting climate risks. Li Gao, head of the Chinese delegation and Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment, described the adoption of the new comprehensive agreement „Global Mutirao: Uniting Humanity in the Global Mobilization against Climate Change“ as the most significant outcome of the conference.
Li Gao stressed the extreme difficulty of reaching such an agreement, citing geopolitical frictions, unilateralism, protectionism and the previous withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement. Its adoption reflects the strong political will of all parties to work together on climate change.
China actively engaged in nearly 100 agenda items, playing a constructive and solution-oriented role during the two-week negotiations. A phrase that came up frequently in the discussions was „strive for better results“ and was included in the final document, signaling a shift from a Chinese domestic policy approach to a common global direction.
The China Pavilion remained one of the busiest and most visited national pavilions, showcasing China's climate action, facilitating the exchange of experiences with other countries and promoting negotiations. China also engaged in extensive bilateral consultations, deepening mutual understanding and moving the negotiations forward.
Going forward, Li Gao said China will continue to advocate a multilateral approach, actively participate in global cooperation, promote green transformation and contribute to the development of low-carbon technologies. He stressed that the successful outcomes of COP30 send a strong political signal: the global transition to a green and low-carbon economy is irreversible, multilateral cooperation is indispensable, and international cooperation is essential.
„Under very difficult circumstances, this conference has successfully moved the implementation of the Paris Agreement into its next decade,“ Li Ga said.
