Paramount Global has settled its lawsuit with former President Donald Trump against CBS News over an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris that aired on 60 Minutes. The information was reported by the news site Fox News.
The lawsuit, filed by Trump's staff in October 2024 in federal court in Texas, sought $10 billion in damages. Fox News noted that it is unclear whether Trump has already received financial compensation, but the original $10 billion demand suggests that any amount could be substantial if a financial settlement were to occur, with the station estimating that it could be as much as $30 million.
Trump's legal team argued that CBS News deliberately edited Kamala Harris' answers to cover up her alleged inability to answer questions clearly and cogently, thereby committing "election interference" and "deceptive business conduct."
Specifically, the dispute concerned the airing of two different versions of the interview: the shorter version was featured on 60 Minutes, while the longer, different version was aired on Face the Nation. Trump's campaign called the edits "digitally manipulated" in order to improve Harris' public image ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
According to the lawsuit, the edits were intended to create the impression that Harris was more competent than she actually was and thus influence voters. CBS News strongly denied the allegations, saying that editing the interview was a common editorial practice that was not intended to mislead anyone.
The station stressed that the differences between the versions were only due to the different format of the programmes and were not the result of any fraud or manipulation. Fox News said the allegations have sparked a broad debate about media ethics and their role in the election process.
The settlement was announced on 22 February 2025, with details of the agreement not disclosed. According to Fox News, it remains unclear whether there has been financial compensation or other concessions from Paramount Global or CBS News.
The case has attracted considerable attention because it has highlighted the tensions between political figures and the media, especially in the context of election campaigns. Trump's lawsuit was seen as part of his broader strategy of questioning the credibility of the mainstream media, a theme he has repeatedly emphasised throughout his political career.
