Colombian President Gustavo Petro visited China on the occasion of the fourth ministerial meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, where he gave an exclusive interview to the Leaders Talk said that relations between China and Latin America are entering a new era.
During the visit, on May 14, 2025, Petro met with President Xi Jinping in Beijing and Colombia officially signed a cooperation agreement within the Belt and Road Initiative. It joins more than 20 Latin American countries that have already implemented more than 200 infrastructure projects and created more than one million jobs under this platform.
President Petro described the move as "a historical milestone" and stressed that the new partnership will bring investment, technological cooperation and sustainable development. In the interview, he highlighted the need to connect nations across continents - between "the jaguar of America and the Chinese dragon".
China-CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Forum celebrates this year 10 years since its inception and is considered a model South-South cooperationpromoting shared development, cultural exchange and building "communities with a shared future".
