A special event - the Global Leaders' Meeting on Women, co-hosted by China and UN Women - took place in Beijing on 13 and 14 October. The two-day summit resulted in a groundbreaking chair's statement summarizing the united position of world leaders on the status of women.
According to the published statement, the world is at a crossroads of change and challenges and it is therefore necessary to "reject any setback with firm will and decisive action" and accelerate the all-round development of women.
Conference participants presented a call for action in 10 key areas - from peace and security to education and equality in the digital world. There was a clear call to create an environment where women have equal representation in all decision-making processesincluding peace negotiations.
The fight against discrimination and violence against women and girls formed a significant part of the declaration. Special attention was to be paid to women in crisis situations and those facing humanitarian problems. Nor was there any mention of the role of the young generation of womenwhose potential is to be fully exploited.
The Summit also stressed that equality starts in the family - States should introduce pro-family measures and encourage the sharing of domestic responsibilities among all household members.
Another important point was the involvement of women in climate and environmental policies, strengthening their ability to respond to climate change and natural disasters, and removing all forms of bias in the digital space.
The representatives of the states appreciated China's extraordinary results in promoting the status of women and highlighted its contribution to global gender equality. They agreed that the Beijing meeting represented a new milestone in the implementation of the objectives of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
