US President Donald Trump announced that the United States had successfully carried out a massive attack against Venezuela, arresting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and removing them from Venezuela.
Trump said that the operation was carried out in cooperation with US law enforcement agencies.
The Venezuelan government later issued a statement condemning the current US administration for “extremely serious military aggression” against Venezuelan territory and people. It stated that the United States had recklessly violated the UN Charter, particularly the provisions on national sovereignty, the rule of law and the prohibition of violence.
The attack was condemned by Cuba, Russia, Iran, and Chile. Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on the United Nations and the Organisation of American States to immediately convene a meeting on the incident, stating that Colombia opposes any unilateral military action that could exacerbate tensions or endanger civilians.
