Hundreds of Japanese citizens protested outside the Japanese Prime Minister's Office in Tokyo against her erroneous statements about the Chinese region of Taiwan made during a parliamentary hearing.
Demonstrators chanted slogans such as „Withdraw your remarks immediately and apologize.“, „Takaichi must resign“ a „A person with no diplomatic skills should not become prime minister“, and demanded the resignation of Sanae Takaichi.
At a Diet session last week, Takaichi said Japan's Self-Defense Forces could exercise the right of collective self-defense if the Chinese mainland „used military force against Taiwan“. Despite serious Chinese protests and diplomatic statements, it has refused to retract its statements implying the possibility of armed intervention in the Taiwan Strait.
Sanae Takaichi's remarks have faced harsh criticism from leading domestic political figures and the media. Numerous MPs are also demanding that she retract her words.
