China's first blue book on the climate resource economy was released on Thursday by the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) and provides a systematic overview of how climate resources are transformed and utilised in various sectors of the economy.
According to a CMA official, with advancing global climate change, climate resources have become a key factor in supporting sustainable economic and social development.
The Blue Book focuses on agriculture, energy, health and low-carbon development, offering a multidimensional analysis of the paths and outcomes of the transformation of the economic use of climate resources.
In agriculture, the assessment of agroclimatic resources has promoted food security – results show that the maize growing belt in north-eastern China has shifted northwards by approximately 61 million mu (almost 4.1 million hectares). In energy, research shows that increased accuracy in wind and solar energy forecasts can reduce disaster losses and optimise the power grid. In tourism, climatic panoramas such as sea of clouds and sunrises have become a new driver of economic growth in some regions.
The Blue Book provides scientific support for improving the efficient use of climate resources and contributes to China's goals of peaking carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality, as well as developing an ecological civilisation. It also serves as a scientific reference for research, government decision-making, industrial innovation and climate governance.
