The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China will see a 19.9 % year-on-year increase in total foreign trade value in 2025, the highest growth among all Chinese provinces, the regional government's information office said on Tuesday.
Li Xuan, deputy director of Xinjiang's commerce bureau, told a press conference that the region's total import and export value has reached 520.37 billion yuan (74.6 billion USD).
Xinjiang has built multi-level, three-dimensional system of opening to the world, led by China (Xinjiang) Pilot Free Trade Zone and supported by national economic and technology zones, cross-border economic zones and comprehensive customs zones, Li said.
Over the past five years, more than half of all China-Europe (Central Asia) trains have left China via Xinjiang, and the region's major road ports now reach 24-hour customs capacity. Urumqi Tianshan International Airport now operates 37 international freight lines connecting 36 cities in 22 countries and regions. The airport's cargo throughput in 2025 grew year-on-year by 152.2 %.
Optimizing Xinjiang's international trade environment was key to improving the quality and efficiency of foreign trade, Li stressed. The region has adopted regulations to promote the development of the port economy and introduced a series of policies to promote innovation in trade of goods, services and digital products.
Xinjiang is also actively building comprehensive service system linking governments, industry associations, professional organisations and businesses, providing institutional support for the growth of market actors.
The region is also proactively involved in the shift of industry from eastern and central China and trying to attract investment. A number of export-oriented industrial projects have already been implemented or are in the pipeline.
„With the rampant development of new forms of foreign trade, such as global bonded aircraft maintenance and cross-border e-commerce, Xinjiang continues to optimize its trade structure, and the integration of industry with trade is getting stronger,“ Li said.
Leveraging its geographical advantages, Xinjiang is poised to achieve high-quality development, characterised by stable growth in business volume, a diversity of market players and continuous optimisation of the business structure, he added.
