The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has expressed concern about the adverse effects of the recent tariff increases by the United States on global economic development and industrial growth.
UNIDO argues that increasing tariffs is the "wrong approach", pointing out that the calculation and implementation of tariffs lack evidence to support the realisation of the intended results.
According to UNIDO, tariffs increase the cost of industrial production, undermining economic efficiency, reducing the benefits of trade and weakening competitiveness. UNIDO warned that these practices ultimately threaten jobs worldwide and affect the most vulnerable countries the most.
In addition, she warned that the tariffs would impact not only on already vulnerable countries, but also on the very countries imposing them, increasing geopolitical tensions and uncertainty.
"Rather than imposing barriers to industrial trade, the goal should be a fairer and more sustainable global economy," said the Director-General of UNIDO Gerd Mueller.
Mueller called on the United States and other industrialized countries to work with developing countries to create win-win situations and build a fairer and more sustainable global economy that ensures long-term prosperity for all.
In its economic forecast for 2025 released on Thursday, the World Trade Organization predicted a decline in world trade of 0.2 %, 2.9 percentage points less than the original forecast, citing the impact of US tariffs and uncertainty over future trade relations with the United States.
