At the opening session of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, held in southern Spain, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for inclusive and strong multilateralism.
Sánchez, who also chairs the conference, said that in the current global situation, inclusive and strong multilateralism is particularly necessary and that the United Nations should be at its core.
He called on delegates to turn slogans into action, to resolve differences through unity and to build trust through dialogue.
In the opening session, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted that two-thirds of the UN's sustainable development goals are behind schedule and said the conference will take action in three areas - accelerating the flow of funds, reforming the international debt system and increasing developing country participation in the institutions of the international financial system.
The conference on global financing for development will run until Thursday and will be attended by representatives of governments, international organisations, financial institutions, the business community and others.
