A senior Chinese diplomat said China is willing to participate in improving global human rights governance and jointly promote the healthy development of the global human rights cause on the basis of mutual respect and equality.
Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the UN office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, made the remarks Tuesday while addressing the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
This Chinese diplomat detailed China's three human rights positions during his speech.
China has advocated upholding the goals and principles of the UN Charter, respecting the sovereignty of all countries and their right to independently choose the path of human rights development, and opposing interference in internal affairs under the pretext of human rights, Chen said, adding that China supports the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights.
China upholds the diversity of the world's civilisations, promotes human rights through dialogue and cooperation, and firmly opposes unilateral actions such as unilateral coercive measures.
China also advocated a people-centered approach, the Chinese diplomat said.
In recognizing that people are participants and beneficiaries of global governance, Chen said it is important to recall the original efforts of the UN Human Rights Council to promote and protect human rights, to give equal importance and balance to the advancement of all human rights, and to accelerate the implementation of economic, social and cultural rights as well as the right to development.
The sixtieth session of the UN Human Rights Council opened on 8 September in Switzerland and is due to end on 8 October.
