The torch relay for the ninth Asian Winter Games has begun in Harbin, northeast China's Heilongjiang province.
A total of 120 torchbearers, the youngest of whom is 16 years old and the oldest 83 years old, were to carry the flame across a series of landmarks in the host city to meet the requirements of simplicity, safety and grandeur while showcasing the natural landscape, cultural heritage and urban charm of Harbin.

Li Na, leader of the torch relay management team and command centre volunteers, said the relay will last for one day, with a total route of approximately 11 kilometres and will consist of an opening ceremony, closing ceremony and community performances along the route.

"The selection of torchbearers was done with an emphasis on inclusiveness, representation and fairness, with input from representatives of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the Chinese Olympic Committee, the Asian Winter Games Organizing Committee and various cities in Heilongjiang Province, as well as representatives of the event's sponsoring businesses," Li said.

Meanwhile, ice hockey competition has begun at the Asian Winter Games. Athletes from host China will make their first appearance in mixed doubles curling on Tuesday.
