The official presentation of the Greek Red List, an important new tool for the protection of cultural heritage from illegal trafficking, took place in the amphitheatre of the Acropolis Museum in the presence of the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni.
The ICOM (International Council of Museums) Red List is an internationally recognised tool that helps authorities such as police and customs to identify and protect cultural property at risk of trafficking.
In her speech, Mendoni stressed, among other things: "Illicit trade in antiquities and other cultural property continues to represent a widespread form of threat to cultural property, both in times of peace and in times of armed conflict.
Illicit trafficking in cultural property is not just a form of criminal activity. It is a complex and well-connected global organised crime operation that is also directly linked to terrorism.
This is a crime with multifaceted implications and consequences that can defy coordinated international efforts.
Combating it requires resources, both material and human. It requires international cooperation and the exchange of information, experience and best practices.
Our country has a strong political will to address this phenomenon and has also developed a multifaceted and dynamic policy to effectively protect its cultural heritage.
Through these initiatives and measures, Greece is at the forefront of shaping international policy to prevent and combat illicit trafficking in cultural property.
We systematically participate in international forums with our opinions and proposals. We develop know-how, contribute to best practices and create synergies aimed at preventing and solving the problem.
The policies and initiatives of the Ministry of Culture open up new avenues of cooperation and, above all, guarantee practices that are gradually being adopted by a growing number of countries around the world.
As of today, our country has another valuable tool at its disposal to achieve our goal: the Greek Red List."
