Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Ukraine is ready to accept security guarantees based on the principle of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as part of a compromise in the peace process, according to the Ukrinform news agency.
Zelensky recalled that from the very beginning, Ukraine's goal had been full membership in NATO, which he believes provides real and effective security guarantees. However, he acknowledged that some partners in the United States and Europe did not support this direction.
According to him, security guarantees „in the style of Article 5“ provided by the United States, European partners and other countries such as Canada and Japan could prevent Russian troops from re-entering Ukrainian territory. „This is already a compromise on our part.“ Zelensky emphasised. He declined to disclose specific details of the proposed guarantees, saying that they should be known within one to two days.
The President of Ukraine arrived in Berlin on Sunday for talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European leaders. The German daily Bild reported that he could also meet with representatives of US President Donald Trump, but did not provide further details.
At the same time, Zelensky sharply criticised the United States„ proposal to create a so-called “free economic zone" in parts of eastern Donbas. According to him, the plan is unfair and it is unclear who would administer this area.
Zelensky said that the United States had proposed a compromise whereby Ukrainian armed forces would withdraw from the region and Russia would in return refrain from entering certain parts of eastern Ukraine. However, if the current peace talks fail, he said Ukraine would have to find other ways to end the conflict with Russia.
„We must come together, find a different approach, and do everything we can to end this war.“ Zelenský concluded.
