The opposition parties in the Czech Republic failed to push through the extension of the agenda in the Chamber of Deputies to include two items relating to the lower chamber's speaker, Tomio Okamura. These were both a motion to remove him from the leadership of the Chamber of Deputies and a resolution in which MPs would have distanced themselves from his remarks about Ukraine made in his New Year's speech.
The proposals were submitted by Olga Richterová for the Pirates and Vít Rakušan for STAN. They were supported by the 90 opposition MPs present, but all 108 legislators of the ruling coalition of ANO, SPD and Motorists voted against them.
The Opposition wanted the Chamber to deal with these points before discussing the request for a vote of confidence in the new government of Andrej Babiš, or immediately afterwards. According to opposition representatives, Tomio Okamura's remaining at the head of the lower chamber is unsustainable, not only because of his long-term political positions, but above all because of the way he expresses himself on the war in Ukraine and the role of the Czech Republic in international structures. In their opinion, the criticised statements damage the country's foreign policy position and do not correspond to the dignity of one of the highest constitutional positions.
Tomio Okamura has repeatedly objected to the criticism and called the opposition's efforts political theater. In his view, it is an attempt to divert attention from the real problems of the country and proof that the opposition does not have its own agenda. The ruling MPs defended his remaining in office, saying that he had been elected by a majority of the House and that his speeches fell within the framework of freedom of political opinion.
The vote took place against the backdrop of a key vote of confidence in the new government. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš emphasised at the beginning of the meeting that the Czech Republic and its citizens would always come first for his cabinet. In his speech, he sharply criticised the previous government of Petro Fiala, which he blamed for economic problems, debt and the deterioration of living standards. He then presented his cabinet's programme chapter by chapter and promised that ministers would regularly evaluate its implementation every six months.
The meeting thus confirmed the solid majority of the governing coalition in the Chamber of Deputies and at the same time showed that disputes over foreign policy and the role of the lower chamber's president will be among the main conflicts between the government and the opposition in the months to come.
