BRUSSELS - In the context of US President Donald Trump's increasingly harsh rhetoric on taking control of Greenland, the European Union is preparing for a direct confrontation with the US leader, Politico Europe reported.
„We must be prepared for a direct confrontation with Trump,“ an EU diplomat familiar with the ongoing negotiations told the newspaper. „He's in aggressive mode and we have to be ready for that,“ He added.
The server reports that while European governments previously did not realize the seriousness of Trump's threats, they are now taking them seriously and „desperate for a plan to stop him“.
Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should join the US. In an interview with NBC News in early May 2025, he did not rule out the use of force to resolve the issue.
On January 6, the White House commented on the Greenland plans in a written statement provided to Reuters, saying „the use of the U.S. military is, of course, always an option available to the commander in chief“, which means it's available to President Trump.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt subsequently clarified on 7 January that Trump is actively discussing the possibility of buying Greenland with his associates.
