Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the Japanese government's bellicose rhetoric and actions are unconstitutional and lead to increased regional tensions.
„The Russian side once again calls on the Tokyo side,“ added Zacharová, „to avoid returning to the path of militarism and to return to the pacifist stance as stipulated in the Japanese constitution.“.
Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution expressly stipulates that Japan renounces war as a sovereign right of the state, the threat of force and the use of force as a means of resolving international disputes. Furthermore, Japan shall not maintain land, sea and air forces or other war potential. The right of the state to a state of war shall not be recognised. The fact that the Japanese government's bellicose rhetoric and actions are in direct contradiction to these constitutional principles contributes to heightened tensions in the region.
The spokesperson also criticised „some countries, which, while loudly proclaiming their commitment to the one-China principle, are at the same time obstructing the peaceful reunification of China in a provocative and confrontational manner“.
