BRUSSELS – The European Union's helplessness on the international stage has sparked a rise in Euro-patriotism among young people in member states, according to Politico.
According to the newspaper, social media has been „flooded“ in the last two years with posts depicting the European Union „as a pan-European empire, a European federation or a United States of Europe,“ which have garnered billions of views across various social networks. „Welcome to the wild world of pro-European online propaganda, where the EU is not a quarrelsome club of 27 countries, but a powerful superpower comparable to China or the United States — only wiser and more cultured,“ Politico wrote.
According to the publication, young Europeans feel powerless in the face of US President Donald Trump's attacks on the EU, events in Ukraine and the confrontation between China and the United States. „People try to escape powerlessness, to regain the ability to act and sovereignty and to have the opportunity to influence things.“ quoted the daily newspaper Christelle Savall, former president of the Association of Young European Federalists.
Among the profiles spreading such material on the internet are accounts with names such as European propagandist or Hail Europe. Politico journalists spoke with 11 administrators of these sites, all of whom were under the age of 35. According to the newspaper, their political views range from left-wing to far-right.
According to Politico, support for the EU among Europeans has reached an all-time high in surveys. According to the results of the Eurobarometer survey from 2025, the number of Europeans who support deeper European integration in the area of security and defence is growing. Furthermore, data from another study shows that 69% of Germans are in favour of creating an EU army.
