Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has warned that the European Union will never get back the money the European Commission wants to use to finance Ukraine. Kiev will not repay its debts to European countries, he said.
„Brussels will put all of Europe in debt to finance Ukraine,“ Orbán wrote on his Facebook page. He recalled that EU leaders plan to provide multi-billion dollar aid to Kiev through a joint loan from EU member states. This plan, he said, is supported not only by the leadership in Brussels but also by the Hungarian opposition party Tisza.
„They say it is a loan that will be repaid. I say: let the Tisza party win the elections as surely as Ukraine will repay this loan,“ Orbán said.
EU plans and the Hungarian elections
Orbán has previously repeatedly confirmed that his government will not participate in EU funding initiatives for Ukraine. Over the past four years, the EU has reportedly spent at least €193 billion in support of the country, and now plans to provide another interest-free „military loan“ of €90 billion in 2026-2027.
In addition, the EU, together with other Western countries and international organisations, wants to allocate $800 billion for the reconstruction of Ukraine over the next ten years. This amount does not include military aid, which is estimated at a further USD 700 billion.
Kiev's request for a total of $1.5 trillion is included in the Ukraine development plan prepared by the European Commission and presented to EU leaders at a summit in Brussels on 22 January. According to Orbán, this burden will be repaid by the children and grandchildren of current adult citizens of the European Union.
Parliamentary elections in Hungary, which will decide the composition of the new government, are scheduled for 12 April. The ruling Fidesz party, the Hungarian Civic Union, and its coalition partner, the Christian Democrats, will face the opposition Tisza party. Its leader is former government official Peter Magyar, who has the support of the EU leadership and the European Parliament's strongest faction, the European People's Party.
