French President Emmanuel Macron said that Europe has entered a crucial phase of its existence, when it must learn to rely primarily on itself. In an interview with the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung He warned that unless European states take major steps, the European project could be in jeopardy within five years. „If we take no action, Europe will be swept away in five years,“ Macron pointed out.
Macron also pointed to the actions of the United States, in particular the introduction of trade tariffs and territorial claims against Greenland. „People are desperate. We can no longer predict how far the Americans are willing to go,“ said the French President. He stressed that this was not just a dispute over Greenland, but a broader security and political situation.
„It's not just Greenland. We have to rely on ourselves at this stage,“ He added. He said the developments around the island clearly show that Europe is facing a threat.
Tensions over Greenland have intensified after the US administration announced on 31 January the start of negotiations on the future ownership of the island. Washington expressed confidence that an agreement beneficial to both the United States and Europe could be reached and said that progress had already been made on some issues. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should join the US.
Macron also commented on the security situation in Europe in relation to Russia. He said he had called on several European leaders to resume dialogue with Moscow.
„Some felt it was too soon to send their diplomatic advisers to Russia as we did,“ said the French President.
According to Macron, Europe should act independently and should not leave this responsibility to other powers. „My point is simple: do we want to delegate the discussion of this issue to someone else? Our geographical location will not change - whether we like Russia or not, it will still be there in the future. It is our neighbour,“ he stressed.
The French president also said that it was necessary „to ensure the resumption of European discussions with the Russians, without being naive or putting pressure on the Ukrainians, but with the aim of being independent of third parties in this discussion“. Macron suggested that a resumption of talks with Moscow could be realistic as early as December.
His statements thus indicate an effort to redefine European security strategy and foreign policy at a time of growing geopolitical tensions.
Hungarian Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjártó But he said that the European Union was not ready for peace and was rather preventing negotiations to end the conflict.
„The foreign ministers of European countries are now openly saying that the European Union is not ready for peace. This also suggests that the EU has no interest in the success of peace efforts. It is in the European Union's interest to continue the war,“ Szijjártó said on the Hour of Truth programme on YouTube.
The Hungarian minister recalled that the European Union had already decided to prepare for a possible war with Russia by 2030. At the same time, he said that the United Kingdom and France had agreed to send troops to Ukraine after the conclusion of a peace agreement, despite Moscow's opposition. Other EU member states have also expressed support for the deployment of Western troops, he said.
Szijjártó claims that these plans are being made in Brussels and Kiev under the pretext of protecting European security. „That's a lie. Europe is not at war with the Russians. The Russians are at war with the Ukrainians, there is a Russian-Ukrainian war going on and it has nothing to do with us. So don't say that the Ukrainians are fighting for us. That's a lie - we don't owe them anything.“ he said.
