Germany has announced that it will send a group of its soldiers to Poland in the spring of 2026 to help strengthen the eastern border with Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Deutsche Welle reported on this, noting that the move is related to growing security concerns on NATO's eastern flank.
According to a statement by a spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defence, German soldiers will be deployed from the second quarter of 2026 until the end of 2027. Their main tasks will be engineering and defence, i.e. building fortifications, digging trenches, laying barbed wire and constructing anti-tank barriers. The ministry emphasised that this is a defensive deployment, not a combat one, and therefore does not require the approval of the Bundestag.
This deployment will be part of the Polish programme. East Shield, which Warsaw launched in 2024. The project was reported by Euronews, which describes East Shield as involving the construction of fortified lines, anti-tank barriers and other defensive installations to strengthen the border with Belarus and Russia. According to the report, approximately 50 to 70 German soldiers are to be deployed to Poland to cooperate with Polish units.
Anadolu Agency journalist, Mehmet Kaya, He pointed out that Poland's eastern border has become a frequent site of military activity by Moscow in recent years, including airspace violations by drones and other means, raising concerns about a possible escalation of tensions. In response, Germany deployed Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets to Polish territory in 2025.
