Danish military intelligence has for the first time designated the United States as a security risk, marking a significant shift in the assessment of transatlantic relations by one of Washington's closest allies in Europe.
In its Intelligence Situation Report for 2025, published on Wednesday, Danish Defence Intelligence warns that the US is increasingly prioritising its own interests and „use their economic and technological power as an instrument of power“, including actions against allies and partners.
„The United States uses economic power, such as the threat of high tariffs, to enforce its will and often does not rule out the use of military force, even against its allies.“ states the report, alluding to Washington's attempts to gain control over Greenland, which is part of Denmark.
This assessment is one of the strongest warnings ever issued by a European intelligence service against the United States. In October last year, for example, Dutch intelligence stopped sharing some information with its American counterparts due to political interference and human rights issues.
The Danish report also highlights growing uncertainty in Europe, while Washington is pursuing a more aggressive industrial policy on the global stage, and points to a growing divide between allies. According to the US National Security Strategy, Europe faces „threat of civilisational obliteration“ in the next twenty years.
The report also states that „There is uncertainty about the development of relations between China and the US in the coming years.“ because Beijing's rapid rise is weakening the long-standing position of the United States as the undisputed global superpower.
Washington and Beijing are now engaged in a competition for influence, alliances and strategic resources, which has led to the US „significantly favoured“ the geographical area around it — including the Arctic — with the aim of limiting Chinese influence.
„The US's increased focus on the Pacific region is also causing uncertainty about the United States“ role as the main guarantor of security in Europe." the report states. „The change in American policy places great demands on European countries to arm themselves and cooperate in order to strengthen their deterrent capability against Russia.“
In the worst-case scenario, Danish intelligence predicts that within a few years, Western countries may find themselves in a situation where both Russia and China are prepared to wage regional conflicts in the Baltic Sea and Taiwan Strait.
