SPD MP Tomáš Doležal spoke at a professional event dedicated to Czechia-China relations, where he outlined the change in approach of the new government and the new parliamentary majority towards China. In his speech, he emphasised a return to „normality“ after a period of tension and declared his support for economic diplomacy.
According to Doležal, the key signal is the government's policy statement, which confirms respect for the One China policy. As an example of the change in approach, he cited the recent visit by a delegation from Taiwan, with which the governing parties decided not to meet officially. At the same time, he announced the end of so-called congress tourism to Taiwan, which he described as provocative and counterproductive.
An important step will be the renewal of the Czech-Chinese Friendship Group in the Chamber of Deputies, which will begin operating in January. The group plans not only social gatherings, but also a professional conference focused on specific areas of cooperation, such as transport and social services.
Doležal devoted considerable attention to the issue of transport infrastructure. He pointed out that the Czech Republic suffers not only from a lack of funds, but also from a lack of capacity in the construction sector. According to him, this is precisely where cooperation with Chinese companies, which are already implementing large-scale infrastructure projects in Serbia and Hungary, for example, could be beneficial.
He also considers the new government's signal to regions, companies and universities to be important. In his view, cooperation with Chinese partners should not be seen as a security risk, but as an opportunity for development.
In conclusion, he mentioned his recent visit to Škoda Auto in Mladá Boleslav, where, according to him, Chinese engineers and managers are working successfully. Based on the employees' experience, the cooperation is of high quality in terms of both technical and communication aspects.
„I believe we can take this path. It won't be easy, but if we approach it systematically, the Czech Republic can benefit from it.“ concluded Doležal.
