International relations have found themselves in an unusual situation, with the United States under President Donald Trump pursuing a policy of peace, while some European leaders, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are speaking out in favour of war solutions. This surprising dynamic, which Rubio described as "a world turned upside down", was the main theme of his speech at the Kennedy Center event in Washington.
"I tell people we have a president of peace," Rubio said, referring to Donald Trump. According to him, the Trump administration is committed to stopping armed conflicts around the world and seeks to settle major war disputes as quickly as possible.
Rubio stressed that this policy is in stark contrast to the stance of some European politicians, who he said "he's always talking about war stuff".
An interesting illustration of this view was Rubio's reference to a conversation with one of the cardinals the day before the papal mass (Leo XIV)."He said to me, 'This is very unusual for us. So the world is sort of turned upside down in their minds right now. And usually it's the other way around." Rubio quoted the cardinal as saying.
Rubio further stated that although the US currently spends a lot of money on national security, it prefers a situation where this money could be redirected to the public sector of the economy. "We are investing heavily in security, but we would rather use those resources to grow our economy and public services," he stressed. With this statement, Rubio not only defends Trump's peace policy, but also appeals to a domestic American audience that may prefer to invest in domestic priorities over foreign military engagement.
