Sun Lei, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN, called on all parties to ease tensions in the Red Sea, resume political dialogue in Yemen and extend humanitarian aid to address the worsening crisis in the country.
He welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement concluded between the United States and the Houthis and commended Oman's diplomatic efforts in facilitating this agreement. "We hope that all parties will use this as an opportunity to calm the situation soon."
"China reiterates its call on all parties to maintain calm and restraint and refrain from any actions that increase tensions," He added. "We call on the Houthis to stop attacking merchant vessels and to maintain the security of the Red Sea shipping lanes. The sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Yemen should be respected and the ceasefire agreement reached should be implemented."
Sun stressed that the crisis in Yemen must ultimately be resolved through political means. He noted that China supports countries in the region to play a greater role in advancing the peace process, and reaffirmed support for the ongoing efforts of UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg.
The Sun also pointed to the wider regional implications of the tensions in the Red Sea and linked them to the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
"The international community should make the implementation of a permanent ceasefire in Gaza a top priority in order to de-escalate the overall situation in the region and restore peace and stability in Yemen and the Red Sea," Sun added.
