The Ungelt Theatre's 30th season started in September 2024 and will culminate on 2 October 2025, 30 years after its opening. The theatre will celebrate this anniversary season with three premieres, a charity evening for the Paraple Centre and a special anniversary website.
Opening of the theatre with Miloš Kopecký
In 1995, the founder Milan Hein and his friend and advisor Miloš Kopecký opened the doors of the Ungelt Theatre near Old Town Square together and started the tradition of donating chairs to prominent personalities.
"When I had the idea to open a theatre more than thirty years ago, a wise man stood by me - the actor Miloš Kopecký. He strongly encouraged me: Go for it! And so I went. Unfortunately, just four months after the opening, Miloš left us forever. Every year, on 2 October, I send him a message to heaven telling him what's new with us." says Milan Hein, principal emeritus and founder of the theatre, who still smiles as he recalls his bold idea at the time.
Since its founding, Ungelt has produced 84 premieres with a cast of the best Czech actors. This is evidenced by the shelf of honour in the theatre bar, where four Thalia Awards (for Alena Vránová, Marta Kubišová, Vilma Cibulková and Richard Krajč) glitter.
Thirty significant milestones
The theatre has also prepared a special website for this anniversary, which maps 30 significant milestones in the history of Ungelt. Audiences can read not only about the founding of the theatre, but also about the first tour, the beginnings of the Summer Stage at Hradčany's Nový Svět or recall the theatre's most important productions.
"We have carefully selected events that have had a major impact on the development of the theatre. This is not just a bullet point list of milestones, but a colourful series of detailed stories and photographs. Everyone can walk through 30 years of Ungelt with us." adds artistic director Pavel Ondruch.
Testing Benches
We're less than a month after the premiere of Date with a Feminist and already halfway through rehearsals for Bench, Keir Allister's comedy full of sharp humour and unexpected twists. Miroslav Hanuš and Petr Stach are getting into their roles at the Kamenná scena and the production is gradually taking its final form under the direction of Vit Vencl (The Glass Ceiling, Good Night, Mum). The Czech premiere will take place on 24 May at the Letná scena.
